Bears fan follows through on vow, changing name

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2757758

How do you spell Scott Wiese?
In a few weeks, that'd be P-e-y-t-o-n M-a-n-n-i-n-g.
Wiese, a die-hard fan of the Chicago Bears, signed a pledge in front of a crowd at a Decatur bar last Friday night that if the Bears lost Sunday's Super Bowl, he'd change his name to that of the man who led the Indianapolis Colts to victory.
Final score: Colts 29, Bears 17.
So Tuesday, Wiese went to the Macon County Courts Facility and started the process of changing his name.
"I made the bet, and now I've got to keep it," the 26-year-old Wiese said.
Wiese will have to advertise his intention in the local newspaper -- the Herald & Review -- for several weeks and then have a judge give him the OK to become, legally anyway, Peyton Manning.
The men have little in common, Wiese acknowledges.
Manning is 30 years old, stands 6-foot-5 and has a contract with the Colts worth more than $100 million.
Wiese is 5-foot-11 and works at an office-supply store for somewhat less.
"I think I kind of represent all Bears fans," he said. "Not that I'm saying they're all idiots like me, but I represent their passion because I really care about my team, you know?"

Police: 3 Pacers players involved in bar fight

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-pacers-barscuffle&prov=ap&type=lgnsFebruary 7, 2007INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana Pacers guard Jamaal Tinsley and teammates Marquis Daniels and Keith McLeod were involved in a fight with a bar manager after a home loss to Golden State, police said. No one was immediately arrested or charged after the Tuesday fight. Indianapolis police Lt. Doug Scheffel said Wednesday it would take several days to complete the investigation to determine if charges would be filed. The Indianapolis police report said the bar manager of the 8 Seconds Saloon might have a fractured jaw and severed earlobe. He told officers that Tinsley had threatened to kill him, the report said. Witnesses told officers that McLeod had shoved people during the scuffle that happened about 2:15 a.m. at the club on the city's west side. The confrontation followed another fight involving a person who employees thought was trying to steal coats from the coat check area, police said. The manager and witnesses told officers that Tinsley, Daniels and a man with them punched the manager in the face and head. The manager "stated that he was unable to defend himself, at which time both witnesses ... stated that they felt that the life of the victim was in danger," according to the report. Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh said in a statement Wednesday that the team was aware of the allegations but would have no further comment until police complete the investigation. "I had nothing to do with this," Tinsley said in a statement released by the Pacers. "I'm extremely upset that my name has been associated with this." Daniels' agent, Glenn Schwartzman, said the players were at the nightclub for an event celebrating the Indianapolis Colts' Super Bowl victory and that Daniels was not involved in the fight. "It is 100 percent, no doubt about it," Schwartzman told The Associated Press. "He is a good guy who did nothing wrong other than be an NBA player and out with the community after the Colts won the Super Bowl." Tinsley was at a strip club with then-Pacers teammate Stephen Jackson in October when a fight broke out during which Jackson fired a gun into the air several times before he was hit by a car. Tinsley was not charged in that fight, but Jackson faces criminal recklessness and other charges. Jackson has pleaded not guilty.

Bears' Briggs out of Pro Bowl

Why even play a Pro Bowl? Urlacher, Kreutz, and now Briggs
Bears linebacker Lance Briggs was dropped from the NFC's Pro Bowl roster Tuesday because of a left foot injury, the third Bears defensive star to relinquish his spot because of injuries.Briggs will be replaced by Tampa Bay linebacker Derrick Brooks, who'll make his 10th straight Pro Bowl appearance after winning the MVP award in last season's game.Click here to find out more! Briggs, a fourth-year pro scheduled to play in his second Pro Bowl, apparently was injured during the Bears' 29-17 loss to Indianapolis in the Super Bowl last weekend, though an NFL spokesman didn't know exactly how Briggs was hurt.Briggs, who had a career-high 130 tackles and two interceptions this season, is the third key contributor to the vaunted Bears defense who won't be recognized in Hawaii because of an injury.Linebacker Brian Urlacher dropped out of his sixth Pro Bowl trip Monday with an injured toe, while defensive lineman Tommie Harris relinquished his spot after undergoing season-ending surgery in early December. The Bears also lost safety Mike Brown, a Pro Bowl selection last year, to a foot injury just six games into the regular season.Antonio Pierce of the New York Giants replaced Urlacher, and Minnesota's Pat Williams replaced Harris.Brooks, who returned an interception 59 yards for a touchdown in last season's Pro Bowl, joins elite company with his latest selection. Brooks, Mike Singletary, Lawrence Taylor and Reggie White are the only players honored as the NFL's defensive player of the year who also have won a Super Bowl and earned at least 10 straight Pro Bowl selections. The Bears still have five players on the NFC roster: guard Ruben Brown, center Olin Kreutz, kicker Robbie Gould, rookie kick returner Devin Hester and special-teams standout Brendan Ayanbadejo. The Colts have five offensive players on the AFC roster, including Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.Only Gould had made it from Miami to Hawaii by Tuesday morning. The kicker hopped on a plane Monday morning, enduring 12 hours of flights to make it to coach Sean Payton's first practice with the NFC squad."It took a while coming that far, but hey, you can't beat this weather," said Gould, a first-time Pro Bowl selection.Briggsy joins Urlacher. Got no problems with this.
